- Pointing Up! is a free utility for Points and regular FidoNet-compatible
- nodes that don't have file hatching capability, but still want to contribute
- DESCRIBED files to a file distribution network such as MSDN (the Macintosh
- Software Distribution Network). The use of Pointing Up! is also an excellent
- way for Points to "upload" described files to any TIC-capable BBS. Why mess
- with a slow online user interface when you can Point!
-
-
- How to use it:
-
- Special note to MacWoof users: ALWAYS turn "Always use MacBinary" off in the
- preferences dialog. Your uploaded TIC (description) file will be encoded
- and useless otherwise!
-
- The use of Pointing Up! is quite simple. Fill in the Preferences info once
- (use your pointnet in preference to the real zone:node/net.point info _IF_
- your boss has you set up that way. From then on, Pointing Up! remembers
- this information. Preference entries are fully described in the dialogs,
- and when they are selected.
-
- Next, choose the file echo Area (under the Area menu) where the file is to be
- hatched. If you send a file to any of the MDN (MSDN) areas, it may very well be
- distributed INTERNATIONALLY, to dozens of connected BBS's, so make sure your
- submission is of value to a wide audience, ok? A description of the area is
- shown in the small info-window at the bottom of the screen.
-
- Finally, choose Hatch under the File menu. You'll be given a dialog where you
- can select the file you'll be sending. Choose your file. You'll then be
- presented with a field where you can enter the description of your file for
- others. Descriptions should not exceed 249 characters (nice round number!).
- A special file starting with UP and ending with .TIC will be created. (The
- rest of the characters in the name are the time it was created.) Simply
- include (Attach) this file along with your original upload, and the receiving
- system will import and/or distribute the file with the description
- automatically!
-
-
- Enjoy Pointing Up!

-
- Modification Notes:
-
- You can add any of your local Boss's file echo areas to the Area menu by editing
- the File.areas file included (and required) with Pointing Up! Make sure the
- text formatting duplicates what is there:
-
- Area <tab> Area <space> - <space> description
-
- The entire entry must not exceed 255 characters - look at the MAC_FILES entry at
- the very end for a visual limit.
